Forget the hype about Garth Brooks' alter-ego. This album stands on its own as a great piece of work. The performances and the production are solid, without a single "filler" track on the disc. "White Flag" and "Right Now" absolutely rock. What makes this work is that, album notes (entertaining as they are) notwithstanding, is that it doesn't seem to be approached as a put-on. The music was given the respect of a straight performance and, consequently, the entire album shines. Due credit should be given to Don Was, the album's producer. In the hands of a lesser talent, this could have been a supreme embarassment. Hats off (pardon the pun) to Garth Brooks for taking a chance and coming up with his biggest winner in years.
