Continuing the proud tradition of being ahead of the curve

Exile, like most of Gary's work before it, grows more significant with each subsequent play. It complements 'Sacrifice' as most of Gary's work is done in couplets (Tubeway Army/Relicas, The Pleasure Principle/Telekon, Dance/I, Assassin, Warriors/Berserker, The Fury/Strange Charm, Metal Rhythm/Outland/Machine + Soul (ok, a triplet there). I find Exile departs from Gary's typical 10 song set, the familiar pattern of intro, dance cut, depressing song, filler, dance song; (repeat for 'side 2' which is not entirely uninvited. To those who 'enjoy' only one or two tracks per CD, I think you need to listen to the albums in their entirety. Gary does tell stories with his work, concept albums if ever there were some. I had the rare fortune of seeing the Exile tour in West Palm Beach, Florida this summer and it was stunning. With somewhere around 400 songs under his belt, he obviously couldn't play everyones' favorites, but his work of 20 years ago is just as relevant and moving today as it was when first heard as a misfit kid growing apart in a small midwestern town. Here's to another 20 years!
