How to Measure a Planet?

Maturing beyond metal

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
After the short, but noticeable progression from "Mandylion" to "Nighttime Birds," The Gathering experienced a growth spurt that saw them acheive a maturity that far surpassed that of some of their listeners. Some listeners just can't accept change and "How to Measure a Planet?" represented a huge change in the band's direction. The songs are softer, more introspective, and Anneke's vocals take on an ethereal quality that goes far beyond the simple sadness that marked her singing previously. While perhaps a shock to some listeners, those who recognize and appreciate talent regardless of whatever preconceived expectations they may have had, will find a great deal of melancholy beauty in this CD. It's great for headphone listening, and it has this one cute, goofy song called "Liberty Bell" that just won't get out of my head! "It's getting dark, it's getting light. We are sitting in a chair..."
