Genesis' creativity lurks in Abacab
Review Score:

(10/10)
It baffles my mind how many people dismiss this album as pathetic or crappy. Abacab is full of gorgeous songs, and the best song has got to be "Dodo/Lurker." The construction of this song is intricate and brilliant, and the lyrics are quite unique. I've yet to come across another song like this one. The jumpy synthesizer and the beautiful percussion thrive in this song. I'm not sure if others understand this, but drumming takes a lot of time, patience, practice, and skill, and Phil Collins does an excellent job as he always has. "Lurker" is the best part of the song; I lose myself all the time in that song as the synthesizer and multiple percussion instruments fill my mind with gorgeous chords and unbeatable rhythms. The riddle itself is neat; it's as if it came from someone's nightmare. This is my favorite song of all time; the band did an excellent job with this!
What also amazes me is the fact that hardly nobody likes "Like It Or Not" and "No Reply At All." When one listens to a song, one should listen not only to the lyrics, but also to the music itself. I've heard others call "Like It Or Not" boring and insignificant, but I just can't seem to place that label on it! Like it or not, I love that song! What got me first in that song was the bass. I love how it teams up with the percussion and splits up occasionally for variation. All the chords in that song are beautiful; Tony and Mike did a fabulous job on the keyboard and bass, respectively. What I must say next may upset some people, but I love "No Reply At All!" The trumpets were a nice touch, and the percussion was still great. (Because of the beats per minute, it's a nice song for fast-walking!) Being a trumpet player and percussionist, I absolutely adore hearing horns, and when percussion is involved, I'm in heaven! Phil has done a great job on this album; you can tell that he's really finding his voice and singing it out loud and proud! He's a very talented and creative percussionist who isn't afraid to try something new, and that's commendable. Now I say to you who loathe this album: listen to it again carefully; you may be surprised with what you'll hear.
