Genesis Evolves

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
With Abacab, Genesis has created an accessible pop album that does not sacrifice its innovative art rock roots.

Phil Collins' vocal work on Abacab lays the foundation for what would become an extremely successful run of hits in the 80's as part of Genesis and solo.

No Reply At All is the signature tune of the album. The combination of horns, Tony Banks' keyboard work and Phil Collins' drums creates a memorable pop record. Abacab, Dodo/Lurker, Keep It Dark and Whodunnit recall Genesis' past, while Me and Sarah Jane, Man on the Corner, Another Record and Like It Or Not, are wonderful pop tunes that never slip into the trite pop musings of their future records.

After Abacab, the band began a rapid slide into mainstream, top 40 pop that never recaptures the original vision and sound of Genesis. For the recent fan of Genesis, start with Abacab and start working your way back to Duke, . . . And Then There Were Three, etc.
