That's what it sounds like they may have been attempting anyway. When this album dropped in 1980,the countless bands that had sprung up in the wake of the punk melt-down were sounding the death-knell for all sorts of 70's arena acts, and this band was no exception. It would be niave to think they didn't feel some preassure from this new musical landscape.Songs like "Keep It Dark" with it's arch, angular feel, and "Man On The Corner",which employed a bracing minimalism seems to be the sound of stadiom stompers grabbing this scruffy new sound by the collar and 'aving a go at it.However, that said, this is very much a Genesis record, with all the competant mucisian-ship and functional songwriting that implies(at least as far as the early-eighties version is concerned). This album marks the first appearence of the psuedo-Commadores horn charts that Phil Collins would use to good effect on his solo work,as well as the looser, more rythmicly oriented sound on the title cut.Genesis' rapid shift from prog to mainstream stadium act picked up speed on this record.
