Why Abacab?

There's almost no reason to review Genesis as they've become a household name. But, a long time fan may help others find what they seek in a catalogue of 15 studio cds by this 31 year old band. Sure, Genesis are no more but their legacy is some great music. I know that by choosing one Genesis cd to recommend there will be argument. However, Abacab is my choice. Why? Well, I like brevity and consistency in a recording and Abacab is just 9 songs and runs around 40 minutes in length. All 9 songs are cohesive and avoid being boring, repetitive or unmemorable. Sure, Genesis and Invisible Touch accomplished similar results but both discs lacked the originality of the songs on Abacab. Sure, this cd is a drastic departure from earlier progressive art-rock excursions. I never thought Genesis was the best progressive rock band (see Yes, King Crimson or even Rush). Abacab displays Phil's drumming tehcniques, Tony's key prowess and Mike's gutiars riffs--creating a harmonius listen. Sure, Phil's lyrics can be surfacy or irrelevant compared to the music played here, but the disc stands up after 19 years. It's catchy but not overly so. There's nothing that detracts on this disc. It would be hard to own only one Genesis cd but if I had to it would be Abacab. If you want only hits from Genesis then buy the inadequate single disc "Hits". Otherwise you can't miss with this cd.
