And Then There Were Three

Leaving The Past Behind

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
As befitting the dusky,neo-noir cover photo, this album represents a shift into an altogether different feel and mood for the band.Gone are the grand,Rennaissanse-faire set-pieces and absurdist British musings,in favor of more understated meloncholy and transportive stadium rockers. The songwriting influence of Phil Collins is writ large in the moody introspection of "Many Too Many" and "Undertow",while "Deep In The MOtherlode"and "Burning Rope" showcase a new, more focesed and muscular ensamble sound. There is a quite evocative and atmospheric feel to this record, and to me it stands out in thier catalogue,it doesn't really feel like any of thier other records, and it shows that this group was far from running out of ideas or inspiration.
