In 1980 Genesis released DUKE. It went to number 1 in the UK and had numerous hit singles. I'd bet at this time many thought Genesis had took a turn for the worst, again...being that Peter and Steve had already left. This is far from true though. If anything DUKE is a classic album, showing what the 80s would end up like and did. The 80s were the times to have fun again with music, and on DUKE Genesis did that. "Whatever happend to you it's too late to change now" from "Behind the lines" sums up the situation Gensis was in, there would be no turning back to the long and sometimes annoying arrangements of the Gabriel years, the music would now be straight foward and totally entertaining. The album starts on a high note, "Behind The Lines" and slowly moves into "Duchess", a song about "when times were good" and "she never thought about the future". Through both tracks the energy is flowing smoothly and finally comes to rest at "Guide Vocal". After this we are treated to one of the best album tracks, "Man Of Our Times", a Mike Rutherford piece which again picks up the albums pace. "Misunderstanding" follows, a classic, and then goes into "HeatHaze". After this we are on "Turn It On Again", another classic track from this album, DUKE. "Alone Tonight" follows, a personal favorite featuring some nifty guitars at the chorus. The end of the album, "Duke's Travels" and "Duke's End" close out the album on a high note again. Loaded with standout tracks and classics, many memorable riffs and lyrics, DUKE is a cd worthy of looking into.
