Now This is What the Word "Progressive" Means

For the last few months I've been listening to various Art/Experimental/Progessive rock albums, and "Lamb" just seems to me so representative of how prog rock music should be conceived and made. First of all, it is and should be a concept album, which following the quintessential concept album -Sgt. Pepper -where the standard had been set exceedingly high by the Fabs for progressive rock back in 1967. The concept of the album, the story of "Lamb" itself written in the sleeve of the CD, is a trippy mind blowing story. It is part of the artistic experience too -if you can understand it (I'm not sure I do completely). Finally, "Lamb" is progressive in both form and style. The form can range from simple to complex, where the style can range from borderline poppy to exceedingly avant -garde. So, "Lamb" adopts many of the best virtues of prog/experimental rock, in that in it "Genesis" tries to take rock music from a banal pop realm to a plateau of high art standards. Some of the songs here are really avant -garde and complex. "Lamb" is amazing both in the emotional and cerebral sense; my attempts to understand the thought behind "Lamb" is bewildering at best.
