Trick of the Tail

What Music!

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
This CD shows the versatility of Phil Collins as drummer, singer, and song-craftsman, having taken over the spot left vacant by Peter Gabriel's 1975 departure from the band. "Dance On A Volcano" starts the listener jumping with its 7-beat tempo. "Entangled" is the sleeper here. "Squonk" is the tale of a delicate little creature whose sadness is its defense. "Mad Man Moon" tells the story of a traveller stuck in a desert. The disco-flavored "Robbery, Assault, And Battery" is the most comical number here. The title song is about a strange beast wandering from his otherworldly home, only to encounter suffering at the hands of the human race. "Ripples" is an ethereal song of water. "Los Endos" is the CD's intense closing number, containing references to the CD's first and third tracks, a device often used in Classical music and jazz fusion.
