Trick of the Tail

Where have they gone?

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
Ripples alone is worth buying this record for. Although I really prefer the live version which is on Archive 2, this is nearly as good. The instrumental in the middle with Hacketts' guitar kind of whining and wailing is just wonderful. From Peter Gabriel through Phil Collins some of the best moments of the band is when no one is singing! They have the best instrumental arrangements I've ever heard, and Ripples (the middle section) and Los Endos really display their creativity. The main difference in their instrumentals between the Peter Genesis and Phil Genesis is Peters' flute. It's really missed after he leaves the band, the calm, relaxing moments before he leads you into the storm such as on The Knife and Suppers Ready are really missed after his departure, but these tracks are nearly as good, if not as good. If you're new to Genesis, this is a good albulm to start on... Duke, Three Sides Live, or Selling England By The Pound are other good starting points too. Even if Ripples never come back, you're sure to come back to this albulm again and again.
