With the departure of Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford were freed to explore new ways of writing songs. At this time (1976), no one was sure of Phil Collins' singing ability. So Banks and Rutherford put extra thought into writing great songs that could stand on their own. With cuts like "Ripples" and "Mad Man Moon", the effort shows. Just try to come to terms with the bridge in "Robbery Assault & Battery". It'll leave you baffled and intrigued.
