Now I wonder why I waited so long. Without a doubt, this is a progressive rock album. The first tune, Eleventh of Earl, sounds like it could of been on Trick of the Tail. It's a beautiful peace, full of energy and clever arrangements.
This whole album is progressive rock by my ears...Yes, I can see a little bit of the later Genesis on Your Own Special Way and Afterglow, but it is not a bad thing. In That Quiet Earth leads into Afterglow perfectly, making Afterglow sound even more appealing when it starts playing. A majestic ending to a beautiful, unusual, and quirky album.
This album is a must-have for any progrock fan. Yes, there are quite a few progrock albums in the mid-70s, some better than this, but still, there isn't an endless supply. They don't make 'em like they used to. The production approach, the equipment, the songwriting, it's all different now. I'm not saying this is the best Genesis album, not by a long shot in my opinion. I prefer The Lamb...Selling England...and Foxtrot...BUT, If you are a progrock fan, buy this one. You don't have to buy any Genesis albums after this one if you don't want, you can stop here. Just don't stop at Trick of the Tail. This one deserves to be in your collection too. Even though The Lamb...Selling...and Foxtrot are masterpieces, they aren't this album. This album has its own progressive rock merits.
