Anyway, song-wise there are some good moments but they pale in comparison to the previous release, A Trick Of The Tail. One For The Vine has a great keyboard solo in the middle but its way too long and lacks focus. There must be five or six different melodies on this puppy and really only two are fairlycaptivating outside of the solo.
Blood On The Rooftops and Afterglow are the two best tracks here. At least there is some balance between the instruments on these songs. Slumbers/Quiet Earth is somewhat interesting in the background and Your Own Special Way has a decent if not spectacular song structure. Eleventh Earl Of Mars has some good keyboard embellishments but some annoying synthesizer blasts. All In A Mouse's Night would have been alot better if Tony turned his synthesizers down especially at the end and let Steve Hackett crank up his guitar solo. Wot Gorilla does not develop the good original theme enough and relies on too many special effects.
By listening to this release, I can understand why Genesis went the pop hit machine route. Too much synthesizer and not enough focus were getting a little boring for Mike, Phil, and Steve. A change was needed which would later have mixed results.
