This is one of the less known Genesis albums, but it contains my favourite Genesis song. "One for the vine" , in my opinion is the best of their songs. Although it has ten minutes, every time I listen to it I don't seem to feel time pass, so absorbed I am listening. The song lyrics is based on the devotion of an army to its general, and tells us how they willingly sacrifice to him during a war. "One for the vine" begins slowly, then starts to improve the pace as the army finds its enemy and engage in battle, and that part of the battle turns the music into a dancing frenzy, with Collins' drums and Banks'synthetizer completing each other in a crazy way, only to get to Hackett's melodious guitar after the war is over. Every time I listen to it in the car I'm in a serious risk of a fender-bender. "Eleventh earl of Mar" has similar characteristics, but not so great. "Your own special way" is great, and I disagree with those who think it's the first step in Collins' dominion over the band with his peculiar melodic style. Let's not forget "Ripples" in the previous album, which is also excellent (both "Ripples" and "A trick of the tail"). our own special way" is emotive, is well-constructed and shows Genesis can do any kind of music they want. The final song, "Afterglow" is a potential emotional bomb that explodes midway with a fantastic effort by Collins singing "... now I lost everything I give to you my soul..." Pure poetry!
