George Michael. One of the great male pop voices

I lean towards the alternative end of the music spectrum, but I've always recognized George Michael's gifted vocals. Penetrating and brooding, comforting and spine-chilling, spiritual and soulful, electric and seductive. Something must be in the waters in his native Greece. The georgeous clarity of Karen Carpenter, pop-sensibility of Cliff Richard, and powerful soul/range of Stevie Wonder. What's interesting is that I'm more into production/arrangements, yet whenever I listen to a George Michael song, my attention is diverted away from anything resembling musical structure and towards the vocals. A wonderful, if not predictable, compilation of George Michael's hits. It's all there, from the orchestral serenade of 'Praying For Time' and ballad 'Careless Whisper' to the Madchester meets gospel 'Freedom 90', the soulful wails of 'One More Try' and breezy jazz of 'Kissing A Fool', to the inspiring 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me', sensuality of 'Father Figure' and rockabilly skiffle of 'Faith'. A great compilation if you like vocals and songwriting with range, power, and emotion. Forget the fluffy prettyboy image, the controversey, the mature balladeer, George Michael is one of the great male pop voices.
