After releasing his 1996 album "Older," George Michael promised fans that he was done with grieving & heartbreak, & that his next album would be more "up." Well, he lied.

Of the 12 tracks here, only 5 are even remotely upbeat. The import version includes a 6th & much needed groove-oriented song: the 2003 UK single "Shoot The Dog," which is a fun, disco-fied political satire about the relationship between President Bush & Tony Blair. Despite the politics, it's a great dance song that captures a definite Bee-Gees vibe and even includes a sample of The Human League's "Love Action." Obviously, this track was removed from the US release to prevent any unwanted controversy, but the song is desperately needed to round out the tempo of the album.

The US album also removes "Patience Pt. II," which is just an instrumental piano version of "Patience."

As for the tracks that ARE included here, few of the songs will grab you right away- most of the ballads move at a turtle's pace and the "upbeat" tracks can take a while to sink in. The only exception being the latest single "Flawless," which is sort of an ode to his gay fans. It's an irresistible club/house track that is sure to fill dancefloors worldwide.

For those who have not heard "Freeek!", the 2002 single, this track is also a stand-out. It's his most provocative song since "I Want Your Sex" and the catchiest thing here. The version on the album is entitled "Freeek! '04" & is supposedly remixed, but I can't hear any difference.

"Precious Box" is another favorite, but it took time to absorb. It's the kind of song that you don't even notice until you force yourself to crank up the volume & listen to the lyrics. It's a 7-minute-long understated (but sparkling) techno track that tells the story of someone who, saddened by life, becomes addicted to television & obsessed with the lives of celebrities. It's at once sad, soulful, and emotionally stirring.

All in all, this is a first-class adult pop album & beats anything out there on the radio these days. Almost every track here will grow on you the more you listen. As disappointed as I was at first with "Patience," it's hardly left my cd player all summer. I just wish George would give us a few more hooks & lighten up a bit. Anyway, it's good to have you back, George. Just don't make us wait another 8 years PLEASE!

George, where did you go? I remember a very talented man in the 80's and early 90's who delivered some amazingly well-written songs, with a [ ... read complete review ]
