Gordon Lightfoot

East of Midnight

Probably the last good Lightfoot recording

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (6/10)
I first bought this recording in 1986 when it was released and wore it out. I had just discovered Gord and was happy to hear something new. After listening to his next two recordings "Thinking Of You" (1993) and "A Painter Passing Through" (1998), this has got to be his last great recording. It's a good album for the time and genre (1986 and synthesized pop). "Stay Loose" is the standout track, above and beyond the David Foster produced "Anything For Love". "Let It Ride" and "Morning Glory" are thoroughly listenable and fresh. Purists of the old folk style and sound by Gord will be put off by this recording. The formula-like sound was a last (and good) grasp at radio airplay. Again, this is his last good enjoyable recording where his voice and music are in fine form. Here, he is the master storyteller and singer.
