Green Day Creates A Masterpiece, Their Best Yet.
Review Score:

(10/10)
I had pretty much written Green Day off after no new music had come out since 2000's "Warning." I figured they had retired, or more than likely, gone on an indefinite hiatus. Boy was I wrong. Green Day sure prove anyone who doubted their power wrong with their newest album, "American Idiot." This release elevates Green Day's music past the standard pop-punk formula and into timeless territory, where almost anyone at any age can find something to love in this. Now don't get me wrong, they didn't change up completely, this is still, no doubt, Green Day. The sound is there, but the song-writing has definitely matured even more than "Nimrod" and "Warning" had, and the songs are a bit more challenging and, in turn, have more shelf-life than more well-known Green Day tunes of past. One prime example is the nine minute long "Jesus Of Suburbia." This is just one of those songs that moves so fluidly and has so many dynamics that the nine minutes pass by without any boredom or any urge to skip ahead. Shorter, punchier tracks like "Give Me Novocaine" and "St. Jimmy," stay true to form, as well as the title track, which is pure Green Day. Songs like "Holiday" and the destined to be a classic "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" are the winners of the bunch, pure passion, anger and emotion are packed into these two songs. The former serving as an appropriate soundtrack to Election Day (Sorry, we're still under the regime of an "American Idiot"), while the latter has a theme that almost everyone you bump into can relate to. "Wake Me Up When September Ends" explores the more sensitive side of Green Day, and is roughly a sequel to 1997's hit "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)." I think this song has potential to be another classic, just like this album is destined to become essential listening in future years. Few bands make albums as bold and as original as this one. Green Day have easily outdone themselves and have shown a new generation of music lovers what it's all about. Just like people my age grew up on "Dookie" and know every line of it, kids today are going to be looking back on "American Idiot" in the same fond way. Green Day have done well to give themselves more staying power, and they forever have my respect. This album is just simply mind-blowing. I recommend it to everyone.
