Ultimately, I believe this has the potential to be a great CD. For the moment, my rating stands as four stars, simply because I haven't yet purchased the CD, and can only judge by the songs I've heard on the radio, and the other reviews I've read.
I am, or at least was, hesitant to even ponder buying the album. American Idiot (the song), even though it has been defended by the band, seems rather offensive to me, and I can take crap pretty well. This is probably the only time someone will hear me seriously say "I feel offended." The band passed the song off as an insult to the media, not to the American people in general. But, as much as that may be true judging by the lyrics (personally, I can't actually understand all the lyrics as the song plays), I still get a hint of criticism towards Americans. And I, for one, am damn proud to be an American. I love this country, and would most certainly fight to the death for it.
But, even I can't deny that the song is catchy. I sometimes catch myself, and chide myself for singing along to it. Maybe that's just because the radio drills me with it over and over and over. Possibly ignoring that particular track, though, there is one other radio-played tune from the album that truly made me want to purchase the CD: Boulevard of Broken Dreams.
Throughout these other reviews, I have heard some bad things about that song, just on the basis of it sounding like a cheap knock-off, or how it is so unlike the band, or any other of various things. But, my opinion sits strongly that this song is excellent. I suppose a person has to be able to relate to music to like it. It seems that's the way things go. If you truly consider the song though, deeply listen to it, and allow yourself to comprehend what the song is about, you'll find it as a damn fine track as well.
I generally consider myself to be anti-punk. I've never liked it, at least the majority of it. But, today, it's friggin' hard to tell the difference between punk and... whatever other kind of rock there is. The "punk" genre has just never appealed to me. I have some friends who are really into it, and I can't stand it. But, bands like Green Day, The Offspring, and Blink 182 (no matter how much the "punks" deny Blink's status as a fitting band to that world, they are) are pretty good. They've got some good tunes. I've also been introduced to Coheed and Cambria (I think that's the right spelling), and because of how some of their songs relate to me, and how some of them are also rather catchy, I consider them a good band. Sure, there are others.
What I'm getting at, though, is that no matter what style rock you like, Green Day is a good band. May they be maturing as their careers progress, so be it. I think it's for the best. And all the hardcore punks can kiss my ass on that. Someday you'll grow up.
