Green Day

American Idiot

Not a green day fan - but this CD is SOLID

I didn't think Green Day had this album in them. It's as big a leap from Dookie to American Idiot as the Beatles' leap from Please Please Me to Abbey Road. I can't honestly say I follow the whole storyline on this CD but with songs this catchy, who cares? "American Idiot" get's things off to a roaring start although it harkens back to GD's more traditional punk style. The next track "Jesus Of Suburbia: (great title or what?) is actually a suite of five short songs segued together and from there we know we're in for a very different Green Day experience. "Are We The Waiting" is incredibly anthemic - bound to be a highlight in concert. And "Whatsername" is pure Beatlesque pop - would fit in on a Fountains Of Wayne CD. Hats Off to Green Day for making angry music so much fun to listen to. Instead of fading away into oblivion they've come up with an assured mature work that catapults then to the top of the punk/pop heap. Definitely one of the best CDs of 2004 - although there wasn't a lot of competition.
