I actually think I was a little intimidated by it. It's by far the longest studio album they've done and also the most broad in terms of styles. In addition to the pop-punk that they are masters of, this album has a little something for everyone. A little ska, a little surf guitar, and what sounds a lot like hardcore metal to me. (Say it ain't so Billie.) I really think it just overwhelmed me. I was used to seeing a Green Day record in my head as some tight little package. To use an expression I hate, this one was just too 'outside the box' for me. When I finally gave it a chance, maybe when I realized they had grown up a bit and perhaps I should mature a little too, this record became a staple of my favorites. It really is a great big encompassing record, one you wouldn't expect from them but one you'll be glad they made.
