Nimrod

Great Album

Nimrod is a big step forward from their other albums. With this release they experiment with other styles, while there is still some punk on the album, the get into lighter songs, ska, and hardcore. They received a lot of criticism when this album was released because it moved away from their pop punk sound, but in my opinion it is better than the album before it, Insomniac. The album opens with three songs that are pretty much like their other music, Nice Guys Finish Last, Hitchin A Ride, and The Grouch are all upbeat pop punk songs. Redundant follows, this is the first experimental song on the album, it is very mellow and Billie Joe actually sings. There is also some great guitar work on the song, simple but good. Scattered, All the Time, and Worry Rock are also similar to their older songs but with heavier guitars. Platypus (I Hate You) is best described as a speed punk song, this track shows that Billie Joe is a really good punk guitarist. Uptight is another mellow song, which also finds Billie singing. Last Ride In is a jazzy instrumental song dominated by Mike Dirnt's bass playing. This shows how versitile the band is. Jinx and Haushinka are two songs that go into one, they can also be considered speed punk. Walking Alone in my opinion is the best song on the album. It is another mellow song complete with harmonica but it is a really great song. The band sounds great. Reject is like every other pop punk song on the album. The next song Take Back finds the band dabbling in hardcore, it is pretty good. Now to go from one extreme to the next King for a Day is a straight forward ska song featuring Stephen Bradley and Gabe McNair of No Doubt on horns. The mega hit from the album Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) is next. This was one of the biggest hits of 1998 and the inspiration for their primarily acoustic new album Warning. The album ends with Prosthetic Head, it starts off a very poppy sounding sond before kicking into classic Green Day style. This is a great album, different than any other Green Day release but I'm pretty sure fans of them or any pop punk band will be into this album
