Too catchy to hate
Review Score:

(6/10)
I've been a Green Day fan ever since my brother popped in a cassette tape and snickered about all of the "bad words" in Kerplunk. When I was younger, they were the best punk that I owned. Later, when I really started delving into the punk scene, they were the best pop that I owned. However, they still had that edginess to them that I could still call punk without feeling like too much of a poser. With the release of Warning however, I think they've departed from their past and settled into a catchier kind of pop--one that I don't feel comfortable grouping in with my NOFX and Bad Religion albums anymore.
Don't get me wrong, I haven't said that Warning is a bad album, because it's not. In fact I own it and enjoy it. I, unlike a lot of people, don't think that Green Day "sold out," I just think that they've changed. Some of their older fans don't like the change and well, that happens. Warning is an album I'd expect to hear on the radio, which could be good or bad.
Some tracks that I dig include Church on Sunday which include some signature Green Day harmonies, Blood Sex and Booze which I think most people can at least secretely appreciate, and of course the song Warning itself, which contains the most ridiculously repetitive guitar rift that you can't get out of your head for days, but on the other hand don't really mind.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that Warning is not a masterpiece. It is not Green Day's finest, it is not the best pop album of the year, it's not insightful or witty or life-changing, but it's a lot of fun. And God knows that sometimes we all need to stop being so damn serious all the time and start having a bit of fun.
My recommendation comes with three stars for the above reasons. If you're looking for something introspective and thought-provoking, it'd probably be your best bet to move along. However, if you are looking for something that you can stick in your CD player and sing along with, then this is your album. It's perfect for those times when you feel that life is too short and too painful to take so seriously.
