Disappointing

Having never heard anything by Heather Nova before, I read a whole bunch of the below reviews on Amazon, and got the impression this would be something really special. It wasn't. The reviewers frequently use the words 'haunting' and 'beautiful', and I expected a sophisticated and intriguing album, with perhaps lush production and a mellow groove. Even something a little off-the-wall would have been fine. But what I got was a thoroughly uninspiring, middle-of-the road, mainstream pop/rock album. It's the sort of thing you'd expect to hear on the Ally MacBeal show. Yes, Heather can sing, but so can lots of people. Her lyrics come across as amateurish and the songs themselves singularly fail to lodge themselves in the brain (or indeed the heart), even after repeated listens. It isn't that this music is bad, because it's not, but there is nothing intelligent about it. Nothing new. Nothing that makes the listener sit up and say 'oh, I've never heard THAT before.' Heather Nova is the new millennium's answer to Pat Benatar: solid, unchallenging, straight-forward radio-fodder. Rock-music-by-numbers. Next.
