Jazz

A worthy effort from Queen

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
In the 1970's, Queen were very diverse musically and they refused to be labelled. Despite the title "Jazz", this album from 1978 sure doesn't hold any jazz song, but there's plenty of different approaches. The opening and very odd "Mustapha" have the ability to shook the listener who might as well shout out: "What the hell is this?" On "Jazz" there's a couple of Queen's hardest rocking songs - "Let me entertain you" and "Dead on time", both rather close to heavy metal. There's also piano driven melodic rock in the shape of "Don't stop me now" - a very catchy tune. "Fat bottomed girls" and "Bicycle race" are both classic Queen numbers. But even if Queen usually obtain a very high standard regarding the material, a song like "Fun it" certainly sounds like a filler to me. "Jazz" might not be Queen's finest album but it's still a very solid rock effort from a time long gone by.

Try harder, guys

Jazz isn't a great album. It's good at best. Half the songs are good/decent whereas the other half are pretty painful.
