Jazz is punctuated by both high and low points. Among the best moments are Brian May's "Fat-Bottomed Girls" (chauvinist perhaps, but undeniably catchy), "Dreamer's Ball," and Freddie's "Don't Stop Me Now." "Dead on Time" has a killer riff. The rest of the songs hit and miss. Some work but wreak of vanilla ("Jealousy," "Leavin' Home Ain't Easy," "In Only Seven Days"). Others are markedly strange but add flavor ("Bicycle Race," "Mustapha," "Let Me Entertain You"). Still others fall completely flat ("If You Can't Beat Them," "Fun It," "More of that Jazz"). Queen is showing signs of burnout at this point after extensive touring and recording and seem bored with their own brand of theatrical rock. Notably, this is the last of the "no synths" albums; sadly, Jazz foreshadows the worst of Queen which--with the exception of two number one singles in 1980--was soon to come.
