Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff

Duff Enough? Maybe not.

Hilary Duff is getting older, but in retrospect her music isn't nessecarily getting better. Her sophmore self-titled album proves to be a little shaky, as it has no definate meaning or concept. One thing is true though...Hilary Duff is growing up. She's getting older and getting into some new styles, just like trying on some new clothes. We'll see where this image gets her.

Musicwise, the album was above average. "Fly", the semi-famous radio hit that roared through Hilary's concerts begins the album. The sound is high-pitched, rock-ish and loud. Think Evanescence meets...well, Hilary Duff. She's changing her image, after all.

"Do You Want Me" proves to be a much better track. The lyrics are demanding but not pushy, angsty but not depressing, and the music is catchy. "Weird" reminds me of a middle schooler's poem turned music, so in essence it's not that great of a stand-a-lone song. It doesn't mean much either, which is pretty much how the rest of Hilary's album is.

Hilary Duff continues on: from wailing ballads like "Hide Away" where she struggles to reach a high note, to beautifully constructed yet painfully familiar tracks like "I Am". All in all, I can't quite see how these songs relate to Hilary Duff.

She's so bubbly and bouncy in person, so why doesn't this album fit her? The answer may lie in the fact that these songs seem so randomly pieced, so different and so clustered. They don't seem to fit in, much like how Hilary is trying to find her place in life, and the music world.

Memorable songs on Hilary's record would be: "Haters" for it's career shattering lyrics and funky guitar intro. "The Getaway" and "Someone's Watching Over Me" for being the best songs on the album (and possibly in awhile from Hilary), and to "Mr. James Dean" for being the most un-nessecary song on the record. That's what happens when Hilary tries to write, I guess.

Oddly enough, Hilary's albums don't have Intros but Conclusions. See "The Last Song". I'll be fascinated to see what she comes up with in a couple of years...
