For the lover of classic News pop, you'll enjoy "We're Not Here For A Long Time (We're Here For A Good Time)", a party song that instantly joins other Huey standards. Other standouts include the first single, "Let Her Go And Start Over", a song you won't get out of your head once you hear it, and "When I Write The Book", an uptempo, powerful tune with a great hook.
The band shows its jazzier side with a streamlined title track and it's gritty, soulful side with a remade "So Little Kindness", where Huey nearly jumps off the CD pleading his case. As a departure for the band, Huey works in a duet with Wynonna that, despite my initial resistance, is really a beautiful tune. And, Huey's complaint that "My Other Woman" has got another man is classic News penmanship.
Expect a more mature outing with "Plan B" - less disposable pop and more songs that you'll want to play five years from now. The News is a polished band that has always stayed true to its roots. This set frames soulful new material with Huey's gravel voice and the band's crisp style. "Plan B" is fun, intense, and a must for the CD player this summer. As a fan of this band for 18 years, I can say they have evolved while keeping the spirit of their eighties hits alive.
