Hypocrisy's miss o' the day

As times have moved on, Hypocrisy has been a hit-or-miss outfit. While my general rating may be a little low as I enjoy some of the tunes here, Tatgren and Co. seem to be lacking their usual flair and love of diversity. It almost sounds as if they tried a bit too hard to capture the love of your typical extreme metal fan. Some of the songwriting is significantly lacking for this album, as well; most notably with their thrashy tune "Unleash the Beast", which runs for 5 minutes and contains a total of three riffs (one being a short transitional run). Old-school Hypocrisy fans may be pleased, but "Into the Abyss" is a little too bland compared to past releases "Abducted" and the eponymous album.
