Iron Maiden

Brave New World

A Modern Classic

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
I was expecting a return to form with Iron Maiden's 2000 release, Brave New World. Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith had re-joined the band and it seemed the band was refocused and ready to put their generally sub-par 90s sound behind them.

Even as a die-hard fan, I wasn't expecting an album like this.

This album easily ranks as one of Maiden's top three albums and anyone who owns their string of albums from 1983 through 1988 knows what a statement that is. This album has everything that makes great music; excellent songwriting, excellent performances and excellent production. Bruce Dickinson turns in one of his greatest performances, singing with power and passion. Nicko McBrain's drumwork is crystal clear. The three guitar line-up is heavy but not clumsy and Steve Harris anchors it all with some outstanding bass playing.

Brave New World's sound is classic Iron Maiden, with some modern elements thrown in. The lyrics are a lot more introspective and poetic compared to some of the cheese Maiden's served up in the past ("Quest for Fire", anyone?) Songs like "Dream of Mirrors" and the title track are powerful and relavent. "Ghost of the Navigator" is one of Maiden's best songs ever. The whole album shines.

3 years later and this CD is still in my play rotation, because it never left. It's an amazing accomplishment and a real treat for fans of classic metal. There are very few bodies of music that have moved me like Brave New World has.
