Jamiroquai

Funk Odyssey

Embarrassing

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (2/10)
As a bass player and big fan of jazz and funk, I embraced Jamiroquai's music breakout in 1993 with a passion. The band's two (even the 3rd, T w/out Moving) first albums were a fresh mixture of cheesy keyboard sounds, forgotten drum beats, Stevie Wonderish lyrism and greatly inspired tunes. Add the outstanding talent of Stuart Zender on bass and the result was extraordinary. But bands break up and people take different directions in their projects. Zender left (with much stuff written already for 'Synkronized') and the band never recovered. 'Synkronized' was a lost-in-space album, no clear direction and experimentation in disco 70s. Now we now they weren't exactly lost, they have insisted on this trend in the highly disappointing AFOdyssey. This last album has nothing to offer. JK's voice is authentically out of tune and the whole album lacks of spirit completely. Coming from an ex-die hard fan, saying this is pretty painful. "Black Crow" is a tune that a dumb, spot-faced teenager could have written in a bad day: it is the worst stuff Jamiroquai ever did. If you have come to know Jamiroquai through this album, go buy the first ones. Unless they re-hire Zender, there is little H (for hope) to us fans that this will ever get better.
