Funk Odyssey

Hmm......No Verdict Just Yet

I am completely new to Jamiroquai. I actually saw them on an episode of "The Naked Chef" w/ Jamie Oliver -- they were practicing Love Foolosophy live at JK's house. After buying the album, I know one thing for sure -- this band doesn't just sound good after numerous overdubs and other cosmetic gimics in the studio. On the show and on the album, the band displays fantastic instrumental musicianship and JK definitely has an interesting (although unremarkable) voice. Several reviews say the band's sound has changed significantly since their first two offerings. The general concensus seems to indicate Space Cowboy is Jamiroquai's best album to date, and it makes me curious as to just how different the band sounded on that album. As for A Funk Odyssey, the first listen wasn't exactly earth-shattering, but it wasn't like you were being forced to listen to Barry Manilow for 30 hours straight either. The musicianship is really tight; however, the songs just aren't the most inspirational songs ever written. Love Foolosophy (in my opinion) is simply fantastic, even though it does seem like the intent was to receive a lot of radio-play (i.e. it SOUNDS like Top-40). Never-the-less, it's very catchy -- the bass line, lyric mode, and quirky guitar riffs gel really well together. However, there isn't another song that really caught my ear. Like many albums, A Funk Odyssey may grow on me as I listen to it more, but the verdict is still out.
