Jamiroquai

Funk Odyssey

Decent Album.....

It is very easy to live in the world of 'WHAT IF's'. WHAT IF former Jamiroqaui zen-master basist Stuart Zender decided to stay in the band. WHAT IF lead singer Jay Kay didn't let riches and fame inflate his ego? But we live in the world of WHAT IS, and the latest album release from Jamiroquai IS what the band has evolved into. An above average studio band who have simplified their sound to the depths of the predictable pop sewers (they are still a top notch live band.).

It's difficult to catch lightning in a bottle twice, and replacing an incredible bassist like Stuart Zender is no small feat. Something is missing from this band, but realisticly, it is rare that bands who's members are getting on into their mid-thirties continue to pump out incredible work. There is an energy within a certain period of time that a band creates their best work within, and Jamiroquai have already used up that energy. Their best days are long gone.

Is this album worth buying? I think it's good (not great) and I have it and like many things about it. But don't expect the memorable base lines on the level of a `Mr. Moon' or "Allright" from previous releases. There are lots of cool vintage keyboards and spacey sounds on this album to keep you distracted, along with the electric guitar riffs you find on Michael Jackson albums. I've never been big on the loud guitars on Jamiroquai albums, and I have a bone to pick with the charts for making `Deeper Underground' a hit and causing Mr. Kay hunger for it even more loudness.

If you're out of coffee and want a quick perk up, listen to this album. But if you're an old-school Jamiroquai fan, after you put it down, the next time you'll see it may be when you're packing up your CD's when you're moving out of your apartment. You'll say to yourself: "Gee, I totally forgot I bought this album!"

It's a good album, but extremely forgetable.

"Have you gone astray or lost your way? You should have seen me yesterday......"
