My secret affair with Jimmy began with the too short airplay of Lucky Denver Mint. I was blown away by the line: "A dollar under water keeps dreaming for me." I didn't know that the album title was 'Clarity', and unaware of the tension between the title and the photos on the album cover, which clearly aren't clear, as far as the intention is concerned. Then I bought the CD, and heard Your New Aesthetic. "You better sing now while you can" is the wail of the artist drowning in the corporate muck that makes "getting on the air" the be-all and end-all. On A Sunday is poignant and achingly mysterious: "What you wish for won't come true. Live with that." Jimmy Eat World is bleak, tender, frightening, sweet, and I hunger for more.
