After releasing several albums and touring the U.S. multiple times, Arizona group Jimmy Eat World have managed to keep just under the radar of mainstream success. With their latest release (formerly titled Bleed American), the band is making their presence known with the singles The Middle and Sweetness. The album kicks off in high gear with the explosively heavy hitting title track, Bleed American, in which singer James Adkins recites
provocatively clever lyrics like "I'm not alone 'cause the TV's on", and "I'm not crazy 'cause I take the right pills, everyday".
The next song, A Praise Chorus brings the adrenaline factor down a notch or two with its upbeat vocals and delightful pop/punk melodies. The bridge of the song becomes an apparent tribute to Tommy James and the Shondells' Crimson and Clover. The record's overlying charm is most evident in songs like If You Don't, Don't, where Adkins boyishly sings "we once walked down on the beach, and once I almost touched your hand". A song the ladies will swoon over, no doubt. Immediately following is the track Get It Faster, which begins with an eery minute-long intro, then becomes an agressive man song about a relationship gone awry. The last song, My Sundown brings the album to a perfect close, a mellow ballad offering closure to the disc, the complete opposite
of the way it began. Wonderfully crafted instrumentals, and deeply emotional vocals make Jimmy Eat World the perfect album to place between those Sensefield and Dashboard Confessional cds on your shelf.
