Kate at her eccentric best

Kate Bush, at her best, is a composer, director, and riveting performer in a breathtaking variety of one-act operas. This album embodies both her triumphs ("Pull Out the Pin," "Houdini," and "Night of the Swallow" are enthralling, and "There Goes a Tenner" is a hoot) and her flops ("The Dreaming" -- which, by the way, is the correct album title -- and "Get Out of My House" verge on the racist). Still, it's never boring or undramatic. And her chameleon-like ability to embody a wide range of characters and emotions using only her voice never fails to astonish me.
