Madonna

Something To Remember

Powerful, Moving, Impressive: Something you'll Remember

This is one of those works by Madonna that gets over looked for some reason. Call it another "greatest hits" with a twist. Madonna puts forth an album with ballads that are not so much the love songs as we're used but are songs about love. Whether it's romantic love gone wrong as with "You'll See," the love that exists between fathers and daughters in "Oh Father," or diminishing love as featured in "This Used to be My Playground," Madonna sets aside an album to reveal her more intimate side. While it may be somewhat of a shocker from a woman who put out albums entitled "Bedtime Stories" and "Erotica" and has been seen rolling around a stage singing 'Like a Virgin,' Madonna truly is amazing on this CD.

There were new tracks such as "You'll See," "Take a Bow" and "I Want You," they go well with tracks that have been popular in the past. This is one of the few CDs you'll be able to find her "This Used to be My Playground" from the movie 'A League of Their Own.' This CD also has a remixed version of "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" which is beyond excellent. It's moving, sweeping, the drums and sounds in the background give you a sense of longing as well as anger over a lost love. There is also a second version of "I Want You" done with an orchestra. This was one of the best tracks in my opinion. It has Madonna showing off her vocals. She gives a sense of haunting, hurt and a mix of emotions that leaves you with an odd feeling.

While this could be counted as a "best of" collection, it stands out on its own as a collection of Madonna showing off her sensitive side. She re-invents herself here, stripping down the sexed-up pop singer we knew from the early 90s. Here she settles down which actually works for her. I'd say this and her later albums "Ray of Light" and "American Life" are in their own league because they are albums where Madonna puts aside the desire to produce dance chart topping hits for more meaningful songs filled with substance. This is an impressive collection of some of Madonna's best work and its unfortunate that it isn't given a lot of attention and or recognition these days. If your a Madonna fan, this is a must for your collection. If not, I'd still suggest you give it a try; you may discover that your a fan of the less flashy Madonna.
