Something To Remember

The Immaculate (Ballad) Collection

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (10/10)
Madonna's is so well-known for her bouncy dance hits that her ballads sometimes get overlooked. After all: "Live to Tell," "This Used to be My Playground," and "Crazy for You" all went to No. 1, proving that she can belt out a slow jam and do so convincingly. "Something to Remember" is a collection of her ballads, and they all have none of the sap you'd find from certain singers I won't name (I'm being nice today). The disc opens with a collaboration with trip-hop gurus Massive Attack. The song is a cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You." My best friend, a music lover of the old school, despised this cover, but I think she pulled it off well by turning it into a slow groove of electronica. My two favorites are the ones produced by David Foster: "You'll See" and "One More Chance." These are two of Madonna's best songs ever, and they are the sincere, effective ballads that Diane Warren could only dream of writing. There's also the No. 1 "Take a Bow" by Babyface, and my personal favorite, "This Used to Be My Playground." If you want a collection of ballads with none of the Celine Dion aftertaste, this disc is the way to go.
