in cold blood

MALEVOLENT CREATION's 1997 release "in cold blood" doesnt quite match up to the punch of their previous releases and here's why: for one thing, scott burn's hot-levelled mix is so distorted that a lot of times it's hard to make out the riffs. the bass drums are so thin and lifeless, that its hard to tell them apart from the snare drum. as a fan, i was a bit uneasy about the lack of original members and for a little while it seemed that at this time MC wasnt really a band anymore. this album also showcased bassist jason blachowicz fulfilling vocal duties for the second time, which comes off as very generic both vocally and lyrically. in fact, even musically it seemed that blachowicz was incapable of submitting any quality material riff-wise for this record. this is also evident on the very forgettable DIVINE EMPIRE release, "redemption" which features "in cold blood"'s whole line-up minus phil fasciana. there are some great moments on this CD. phil's material and guitar work are exactly what you would expect from a quality MALEVOLENT CREATION release...the problem is that the mix and lyrical subject matter just don't do it justice. dont make "in cold blood" your first MALEVOLENT CREATION experience...but definitely get it to complete your collection.
