Manhattan Transfer

The Christmas Album

Christmas music with a touch of jazz from Manhattan Transfer

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
For those who like their Christmas album with a touch of jazz, we have this 1992 release courtesy of the Manhattan Transfer. Along for the ride are Tony Bennett (on "The Christmas Song," of course), tenor-saxophonist Pete Christlieb, and trumpeters Jackson Sheldon and Harry "Sweets" Edison. I always like a good Christmas medley, and this "Christmas Album" has a couple, one having to do with Santa and the other with the Holidays. "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is probably the highlight of the album by traditional standards, but "Snowfall" is pretty good as is "Goodbye" (yes, the Beatles song). A few of the numbers having the backing of an orchestra, but most are more intimate. Yes, these are mostly low-keyed numbers, more background music than sing-along to be sure. But this particular "Christmas Album" would be especially nice to listen to in front of the fire when the kids have gone to bed.
