A Real Disappointment

I, too, have been an Almond fan for a long time, and I read the positive reviews of Open All Night with great anticipation. I have to say, I honestly cannot understand why anyone finds this dull, uninspired, and lyrically embarrassing disc so worthy of praise. And it pains me to say that, as Almond's Mother Fist album is one of my all time faves and still holds up, as does his The Stars We Are (REISSUE, PLEASE!) and Untitled. The duet with Siouxsie sounds cooler than it is (their voices mesh nicely; same on the other duet with the Sneaker Pimps siren--but neither are particularly good, um, songs). "Tragedy" (grand-scale fun Marc), "Black Kiss" (silly-nasty-dancy Marc), and the closing track, "Midnight Soul" (nasty blues--a cool new direction for him) are the only tracks even worth listening to, although they do hint at more interesting directions for Marc to pursue (an album of creepy blues songs seems so up his alley I WISH he'd give it a go). The rest of the disc I rank among his worst efforts mostly because they attempt absolutely nothing and are even kind of embarrassing to listen to, and he's too clever a boy to do such a thing.
