Tony Visconti seems to think that on Tanx, Bolan and the gang were repeating themselves. Now, making another pop album, yes. But repeating themselves? I care to disagree. Bolan had been making pop albums for a long time by 1973 (considered to be a pop music veteran), and this is no exception. On this album, Bolan shows his songwriting abilites are still far above average and that he is more than capable of dishing out more pop albums. Songs like "Mister Mister", "Shock Rock", "Electric Slim & The Factory Hen", and "The Street & Babe Shadow" show Bolan's pop music is still fresh and crisp. However, "Electric Slim & The Factory Hen" and "The Street & Babe Shadow" are titles of songs you normally would not think are titles for pop music. It is possible that Bolan was slowly moving out of pop in 1973 with his trademark song titles and returning back to the Electric Warrior days with "Life Is Strange". It would have been interesting to see what Bolan would have become after 1977. I'm sure he would have matured down the same path that Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Lou Reed did. The musicians and producer may have been close to mutiny, but that kind of attitude doesn't reflect onto the final outcome. Bolan reveals to the public that he is confident, stable, and ready to hit super stradom. (Which was far from the truth.) Yet this reassurence was good for his music, and I can now reassure you that this album should without a doubt be in your collection to have and to hold for years to come.
