In comparision to the raw social commentary and original underground sound of Manson's debut, Portrait of an American Family, and the eerie, dark industrial sound of Antichirst Superstar, this newest Manson album is quite lacking. Somewhere along the line, Manson lost the ability to write good, effective lyrics. This album has some of the dumbest rhymes I have ever heard, and the worst of them are probably in the song "mobscene." This album has three tracks that hit me: "This is the New Sh**," which has a very cool chorus, "Doll Dagga Buzz Buzz Ziggety Zag," with a great Berlin jazz sound, and "(S)Aint," which I just like for some reason, despite the deliciously idiotic line, "I am a bone-sopper death's head on a mop stick."
Overall, this is still a viable effort for Marilyn Manson, but the message isn't nearly as strong as it has been in the past. With the first three albums, you could feel a certain world growing within the music and words. This album fails to stand on its own. For me, it was generally disappointing, but still a Manson record, all the same.
