Songs About Jane

Partially Phenomenal

Review Score: StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar (8/10)
It is a curiosity how the first single off of this album, "Harder to Breathe", is easily the worst song of the CD. This song will not even be included in this review, it is that bad. It is in no way indicative of the overall appeal of the album - one which is at once inventive, catchy, and nostalgic (the drums and guitar synths are especially remniscient of the Unparallelled genius that is Stevie Wonder, a good thing in any light). While the album can be enjoyed nearly all the way through, several tracks break up the flow and disturb the mellow, funky effect the CD should have. Tracks like "Tangled" and "Shiver" are the most noteably extraneous, and are not necessarily weak, but do not approach the intelligent lyricism and innovative guitar riffs (unfortunately, the opening bars from "Tangled" sound dreadfully similar to those in the next and much better song "the Sun")in the other tracks to the album. Many of the songs are saved from mediocrity by breaks within the song, especially the tempo change in "The Sun" and the gradual buildup in the slow jam "Secret", which track still unfortunately drags out a little. It is inconsistencies such as these which make the album merit four stars, but several five star songs ("Sunday Morning", and "Must Get Out") make this album not only worth buying, but worth listening to. That's all too rare nowadays.
