Ok, first let me start off by saying that I pretty much consider myself a rock fan. And I too find myself pissed off at MTV for releasing crappy, packaged garbage. And, as a musician I am apalled by the horrendous musicianship of many of the bands they show. And yes, I too know my "underground" music, and no, I'm not some sissy pop music fanatic(my favorite bands are Rush, DT, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, and Pain of Salvation.)

All of those things are ammunition that some people are using against Maroon 5 it seems. Because they are sucsessful, some people are quick to stereotype them. Theres much more to them then some people would see. Musicianship? Excellent. Lyrics? Well, I don't hold these in as high a regard as most people, but they certaintly don't ruin any songs.

This isn't to say that if you gave this cd a bad raiting you are "wrong." If you listened to the CD and honestly didn't like it then more power to yah. I'm just mad at people who don't give the CD the chance it deserves, and give it 1 star without even listening.

Anyways...enough with that, on to the CD itself.

On songs of Jane, Maroon 5 has provided a nice breath of fresh air. They blend Funk with pop/rock in ways that I havn't heard before. I'd been sooo locked up in some of my heavier music, and with pure Jazz that upon first I just felt completly refreshed. The musicianship on this album may put off some of the pop fans though...it is actually surprisingly complex, which is something that has tended not to go over well with the pop-fans.

As far as some of the complaints go:

Vocals - No, their singer isn't Justin Timberlake. Few people in the world are. I highly doubt the singer chose to sound like JT, so don't slam him. He does his job, and he does it pretty well.

Repetitiveness - Hehe, I don't hear it personally. Every song adds something new to the mix. Some songs can be compared to others, but thats to be expected.

Anyways...if you are a fan of funk then you probably will like this album. If you are a pop fan, looking for catchy music, yah might like it, yah might not. If you like it, you will love it. If you are a rock fan, and approach this album with an open mind, you will probably like it. And, lastly, if, like me, you are someone who is CONSTANTLY looking for music you havn't heard before, and spend a great deal of time trying EVERY type of music you come across from, from flamenco to jazz to pop to metal, then you probably will walk away from this album feeling very satisfied.

Absolutely Amazing!

These guys are really annoying. They do sound a little bit like a boyband, every song is about girls and love, and plus theirs just as much [ ... read complete review ]
