Sweet's finest, but not for beginners

This is Matthew Sweet at the height of his talents, lyrically stunning and evasive, this album creeps up on you like autumn, and then never lets go. I can't imagine my collection without Altered Beast. For newcomers to his work, this may not be the place to start, for that go to Girlfriend or 100% Fun, fantastic albums that instantly hook the listener. Altered Beast is the next level. An amazing pop album that holds a brooding sense of doom in each catchy track. Garth Brooks should have given a listen before trying out his new pansy pop-idol persona, he would have found that it takes more than a change of clothes to head in a new direction.
