A one-star review for 'In Reverse?' I don't get that. I admit that Matthew Sweet will probably never again write songs as good as those on 'Girlfriend' and, especially, 'Altered Beast.' His lyrics are - generally - much more cryptic than they used to be, but 'Faith In You' is the only song here that I think is bad(lyrically...the tune is great). This is the best ALBUM - that is, a total production, as he's done since 'Altered Beast.' The one-star review indicates the reviewer has no idea what Spector's wall of sound was about. It wasn't about picking out individual instruments in the mix, but rather combining instruments(all playing live in the room)to create one dramatic roar of a sound. Sweet and his team tried to re-create that method in the context of the kind of songs he was already writing. Brian Wilson might have admired Spector and used his players, but he didn't combine the sounds in the same way ertainly didn't mixdown that way. It took me several listens to appreciate 'In Reverse' for the songs instead of the production methods. 'Write Your Own Song' is really the only song that grabs you and says "Hey dumb listener, here's what I mean.' The rest are more vague and need to be chewed on a bit. If you can't appreciate the way the first three tracks fit together as a whole then, well, you may be one of those guitar wankers who think Sweet should have been disembowled for not featuring Robert Quine or Richard Lloyd on the last two albums. It is, at times, a little softer sounding than my usual taste, but one listen to the solo break of "I Should Never Have Let You Know," in which a pedal steel pops into the middle of the Spectorian roar, and 'In Reverse' gained permanent acceptance in my collection. Make that rating 4 and 1/2 stars.
