B+ Effort from the best pop/rock artist of the 90s

Matthew Sweet is one of those rare artists that inpspires either love or indifference. For those folks who appreciate Sweet's brand of intelligent pop this album will prove most satisfying. Beware, this is no 100% Fun, Girlfriend, or Altered Beast--thankfully it is also not another Blue Sky on Mars. In Reverse takes many of the lyrically introspective themes and couples them with 1960s influenced musical experimentation replete with backward audio tracks and the best guitar work since Robert Quine left Sweet's entourage. Although this album fails to hit the stellar heights of some of his more popular albums, it also avoids the shortcomings of his less inspired work (e.g. Blue Sky on Mars). If you are already a convert to Sweet's pop/rock sensibility then you certainally can't go wrong with this album.
